The sound notification that others are complaining about can be turned off within the app itself. I am able to send and receive mail and all folders are set up just as they are

By KevFebruary 15, 2012 (Motorola Droid 3 with version 1.3.10) Great update now allows you to select notification levels for multiple email accounts, so personal/business emails can sound off but spam account can be ignored till convenient. [edit] ahh, noticed the checkbox options under the "Edit" button. Excellent!
